# Excessive HDD Activity when downloading torrents and in same time slower download speed

**Symptoms**

- Excessive HDD Activity when downloading torrents

**Cause**
This is a known issue, but it is not caused by Rtorrent itself. This may be because your volume is fragmented (the reverse process of disk defragmentation)

**Resolution**
There are two solution depends on what your needs.

- if your maximum download bandwidth is limited to 1Gbit/s you can simply disable "Preallocate files" from the rtorrent settings:

- however if your download ISP link is better than 1Gbit, eg. 2Gbit, 10Gbit or maybe more, then make sure to have enough space on disks

**Notice & Advise**
Please always keep at least 20% free space on your disks.
