Gdy do plików na urządzeniu NAS uzyskuje dostęp komputer Mac za pośrednictwem protokołu SMB lub AFP, system macOS może dodawać do plików dodatkowe informacje w postaci „rozszerzonych atrybutów". Zewnętrzne dyski USB z systemami plików takimi jak FAT32, exFAT i NTFS nie obsługują tych rozszerzonych atrybutów, dlatego są one oddzielane i zapisywane jako nowy plik o tej samej nazwie co plik oryginalny, ale z prefiksem „._".
